Vacant Storefront Mural Project
Vacant storefronts in the Mt. Oliver business corridor along Brownsville Road were cleaned and fronted with positive, colorful murals. The HEDC purchased the materials for the murals and local artist, business owner and HEDC board member Maria Prascak provided the painting time and talent. In addition to beautifying the neighborhood, several of the storefronts that received murals were subsequently rented and now house new businesses.

Treevitalize Pittsburgh Grant
The HEDC received a grant of 12 new street trees from the Treevitalize Pittsburgh program. The trees were planted in Knoxville along Brownsville Road at the Elder-Ado Center, the Knoxville Branch of the Carnegie Library and several independently owned businesses.

Clean Sweep/Earth Day Cleanup
The HEDC organized and conducted a cleanup of Mt. Oliver Borough owned vacant lots from Wagner St. to Walter St.

Mt. Oliver Borough Beautification
The HEDC sponsored a group of student from Pitt that worked on beautification projects in the Borough like painting the streetlamps.

MLK Community Mural Project
The HEDC participated in the recruitment, site selection and design of two community murals that were painted in Mt. Oliver Borough by the MLK (Moving the Lives of Kids) Community Mural project. One mural is located at the Clocktower intersection on Brownsville Road and the second mural is at Ormsby Park. The clocktower mural was unveiled to the public on July 26, 2009 in a ceremony celebrating the history, diversity and vitality of the hilltop area. Financial sponsorship of the murals was provided by Mt. Oliver Borough Council.

Cruisin' on the Hilltop Street Fair
The first annual Cruisin' on the Hilltop Street Fair & Classic Car Cruise was a fantastic day filled with good times & gettin' to know the neighbors! We started by closing 3 blocks of Brownsville Road to traffic. Then we added great food, sidewalk sales by local businesses and craft vendors, cool classic cars, games & prizes for kids, a fleamarket, live music from the Mansfield Five, the mural unveiling and raffles & prizes. All of these things made the day a ton of fun, but the best part was seeing so many people have such a good time celebrating their community! A huge thanks to all of those who donated their time, equipment, space, services and goods to the event. We couldn't have done it without you and your support truly made the day a community sponsored, community produced event. What would you like to see be part of the fun next year? Want to participate as a vendor, car cruiser or organization? Drop us a line & let us know!
